In the event of a harsh winter, the lights could dim for a total of nine hours, according to Ofgem’s electricity capacity estimates for the next two winters, which were released this week.
The margins of surplus electricity ‘are still expected to drop to their lowest level in 2015-2016 resulting from closure of older power stations,’ the assessment states. ‘After this, the margins are expected to improve as new power stations are introduced.’
The assessment is based on data from National Grid accompanied by Ofgem’s own analysis.
