‘Patient-friendly’ lighting at Dubai’s new Prime Hospital

A hotel-style ‘patient-friendly’ atmosphere underpins the lighting design at this private hospital in Dubai.

The brand new 100-bed Prime Hospital in the Garhoud area of Dubai is the latest development from the UAE’s Prime Healthcare Group, which has been running medical centres, pharmacies and diagnostic centres in the country for more than 15 years.

Working with interior design practice DWP and specialist healthcare consultant Hosmac, lighting and acoustics consultancy Acoulite assisted in the development, design and implementation of the lighting throughout the project.

While our understanding of how lighting affects health increases by the day, ironically, hospitals and clinics still aren’t generally known for their people-friendly lighting. More common are functional fittings.

But at this private hospital, aimed to create a ‘boutique hotel’ feel in its front-of-house areas A strong emphasis was placed on creating a pleasing atmosphere for patients and visitors. This was achieved by using cove lighting, feature pendants and contemporary finishes.

The hospital has been designed according to the American Institute of Architects’ guidelines and built to the standards set by international healthcare accreditation body JCI.
