Needham Market train station pioneers LED-friendly platform material

Network Rail has replaced the concrete platform at Needham Market station with a pioneering fibreglass composite material that can be fitted with LEDs to mark the platform edge for track safety.

The material, from UK-based Dura Composites, can also be fitted with a heating system to melt snow and ice, International Railway Journal reported.

British engineering firm Hammond replaced the 240-square-metre platform in less than 36 hours, the website reported. Hammond was subcontracted to project leader Abellio Greater Anglia.

Needham Market, on the London-Norwich line, is the first station in the world to use the material, Dura said.

The product, called Dura Platfrom, won ‘Best New Track or Infrastructure Product’ at last month’s Railtex Industry Awards. Dura said that it drastically cuts costs and installation time, minimising disruption to passengers.

The material is expected to last for 50 years.
