Abu Dhabi saves AED 3 million a year in LED upgrade

Abu Dhabi sees the move to LED lighting as key to meeting its sustainability agenda and ambition to be a world leader

Abu Dhabi City Municipality is busy upgrading its public lighting to LED systems as part of a sustainability master plan across its infrastructure. The move will save the Municipality more than AED 3m per annum in energy costs.

The strategy is expected to cut the total cost of public lighting in Abu Dhabi by about 60-75% over the next two decades. It will also slash power consumption by at least 60%, diminish carbon dioxide emissions by about 75%, and minimise equipment and maintenance works by about 40-80% in the future.

Abu Dhabi aims to be among the top cosmopolitan cities worldwide and the move to LED lighting aims to reduce light pollution rates by 60%.

The Municipality has already implemented a number of projects in line with the strategy, including the installation of an LED lighting system in Sheikh Zayed Street. A benchmark study, commissioned to evaluate and compare LED lighting solutions with traditional lighting systems, showed that LED lighting systems achieved an annual saving of 85% and cut down the number of lighting devices in the same street from 1000 to 660 LED lamps. Installation of LED lighting in the Sheikh Zayed Tunnel reduced consumption by 86%.

LED decorative lighting replaced traditional lighting on Sheikh Zayed Bridge, where consumption plunged by 81%. Similar success has been achieved in pedestrian tunnels, where power consumption had dropped by 56%.

The Municipality has also implemented a sustainable lighting project in East Sector Zone 48 and West Sector Zone 33. The project reduced the total power consumption from 54 to 12 kW thanks to reducing the electrical power of lighting fixtures from 477 W to 108 W.

Abu Dhabi City Municipality has prepared the Public Lighting Guide, which is intended to disseminate lighting principles among all industry segments. The Guide, which consists of 500 pages comprising detailed information about the principles of lighting and technology, extends to buildings, parks and public squares.
