Top designer to headline Light Fixture Design conference

Skira has received a host of awards including a Red Dot, a Lighting Design Award, a Lux Award, an iF Award and an ADI Index trophy.

One of the most successful luminaire designers of recent times, the multi-award winning light fitting designer Dean Skira, has been named as the headline speaker at this month’s Lighting Fixture Design conference in London.

In our special keynote, Skira will give a presentation entitled ‘How to create luminaires with unbreakable specs’. The Croatian designer has received a host of awards for his lighting design work, including acknowledgements from the IES, the IALD, Architizer, Blueprint, the Lighting Design Awards, Delta of Gold, Illumni Infinity and Codega; as a product designer he has received the Red Dot, a Lighting Design Award, a Lux Award, an iF Award and an ADI Index trophy.

Other sessions in the design section include an examination of the intellectual property issues in the lighting business. Specialist lawyer Henrik Villumsen will talk on: How to protect yourself in the patent landscape. He’ll explore what steps lighting manufacturers can do to minimise a patent dispute. He will look at the common pitfalls the decision, when confronted with a patent infringement, to pay up or fight in the courts.

Additionally, a panel of experts –  including Eoin Billings of Billings Jackson Design, Mark Sutton Vane of Sutton Vane Associates, Paul Taylor of Aurora, Gordon Routledge of Lux and Stephen Philips of Arup – will discuss how the industry can deal with the digital disruption created by the inclusion of lighting in the internet of things.

They will share their learnings and insights about coping with constant disruption.

Other crucial topics set to be covered at the conference include include flicker, glare, TM30 and the digital disruption caused by the inclusion of lighting in the Internet of Things. Specifically the conference will explore: How to benefit from emerging markets in lighting; How design to get great TM30 metrics; How to nail glare and visual comfort; How to address flicker; How to deal with short product cycles; How to deal with disruption – the lessons from history; How to create luminaires with unbreakable specs; How to protect yourself in the patent landscape.
