Who’s the lighting industry’s best customer?

Previous winners of the Client of the Year category have included retailers, transport organisations and property developers.

The hunt has begun for the lighting industry’s best customer. Entries are now open in the Client of the Year category of the 2017 Lux Awards, and judges say they are looking for an organisation whose lighting strategy goes beyond energy efficiency and the standards and embraces lighting’s potential to achieve strategic objectives and improve occupants’ wellbeing.

Winners are nominated by the lighting industry itself: manufacturers, consultancies and design practices name who they regard as enthusiastic early adopters of new technologies and techniques. 

Previous winners have included retailers, transport organisations and property developers.

In 2016, the winner of the category, sponsored by Dextra since 2014, was Transport for London. The judges said TfL was an ‘exemplar client’ who ‘supported engineering excellence’. It has ‘consistently supported the industry’ by ‘pro-actively using lighting to address the challenges across its estate’.

In 2015, the winner was Bupa. The provide healthcare provider rolled out an extensive LED lighting refurbishment programme covering 300 care homes to assist compliance with its Environmental 2020 policy to reduce energy consumption and carbon impact globally, while also improving the living and working environment. Highly commended was Nestle, a company ‘who challenges lighting suppliers to deliver the best possible installations’.

In 2014, the winner was Sainsbury’s. The judges said that the supermarket chain boasted probably the most knowledgeable and experienced end user lighting team in the UK. Highly commended that year was Heathrow Airport and the Spirit Pub Company. 

In 2013, the judges named Intu as Client of the Year in recognition of ‘an LED rollout of awesome scale’. Highly commended were The Crown Estate, London Underground, The The Victoria and Albert Museum and Westminster City Council.

In 2012 the winner was upmarket grocery chain Waitrose. The judging team described it as a client with a strong energy reduction agenda who is ‘consistently open to new ideas’. Waitrose’s Stratford store in east London was the world’s first Breeam ‘Outstanding’ retail project. Following successful trials at its Bracknell store, lighting one aisle with a specially designed 600 x 600mm LED module, Waitrose has lit the complete sales area of its new store in Stratford upon Avon with solid-state lighting. It is believed to be the first retail store in the UK to do this without exceeding an energy consumption of 10W/m2. Highly commended was Manchester Airport, Capital Shopping Centres, Oxford University Estates Directorate,  Network Rail, Next and Princess Alexandra Hospital.

In 2011, the winner was Land Securities, the property developer whose CSR policy for lighting means an energetic commitment to continually improve sustainability targets. Its approach is to focus on whole-life costing rather than initial capital expenditure and the company is open-minded to the advice offered by its consultants. Land Securities has proved collaborative in its approach with lighting professionals, whether lighting projects are initiated to reduce energy or to create safe and secure environments. Highly commended were Manchester Airport and the BBC.
