THE SERIOUS business of judging in the Lux Awards has got underway in London.
The projects team, which includes senior lighting specialists from Sainsbury’s, Gatwick Airport, Thameslink Rail, Westminster City Council and Oxford Brookes University, began assessing entries from across the UK.
Over the coming months, the judges will visit shortlisted schemes and assess them in situ. They will quiz clients, suppliers and occupants about their lighting decisions as well as evaluate the success of the installation in delivering the client’s goals.
Similarly, a triage team is currently assessing the products and shortlisting those manufacturers who will be invited to present to the full product judging team in September. Samples will be appraised and tested.
‘It’s a rigorous process,’ says Ray Molony, chairman of the judges. ‘Because it has to be. The reason we visit shortlisted projects is because photography can often mislead. Sometime it flatters the building and sometimes digital photography can make a lighting installation appear to have hotspots, when in fact it could look fine to the human eye.’
The shortlisted projects list will be published on Monday 31 July and the products shortlist will be published on Friday 22 September.
Now in its seventh year, the Lux Awards has established itself as the best recognised awards scheme in the business. The programme honours not just the people in the industry, but the customers who are doing great things with lighting.
The Lux Awards are designed to celebrate and reward both creativity and sustainability, recognising clients and end-users that have used lighting in exceptional ways to improve their lit environment, reduce energy and achieve business objectives.
The Lux Awards ceremony takes place on Thursday 16 November at The Intercontinental London – The O2 with its glistening night-time views across the River Thames.
