THE ORGANISERS of the LuxLive 2018 exhibition in London have unveiled plans for an ambitious ‘town square’ to host a special event on the urban environment, the Safer Cities conference.
The ambitious town square will feature an arena with banked seating, roads, trees, cycle lanes, street furniture, and even a café bar inside a London Routemaster bus – all illuminated by the latest in exterior LED luminaires.
The Safer Cities conference will explore how lighting and other interventions can help the fight against anti-social behaviour, vandalism, crime and suicides in our cities.
Among the speakers at the event will be former senior Metropolitan Police officers Ann Burroughs and Mark Pollard. Both will explore from their different perspectives how architects, designers and local authorities use urban design to passively reduce crime in the public realm. They will look at design strategies such as place-making and social norming to address issues such as alcohol-related crime, product theft hotspots, anti-social behaviour and vandalism.
Giving the local authority’s perspective will be Eddie Henry of Hackney Borough Council who will explore trends in urban crime with a focus on spatial dimensions, the socio-economic factors and how local authorities and communities can respond.
Don Slater, associate professor at London School of Economics will reveal his latest sociological research and how it can inform urban lighting design.
The London School of Economics has recently completed a two-year research project which aimed to define a social research approach that nurtures a better understanding of social spaces and lighting design, centred on the lives of people and their communities.
Major lighting manufacturers backing the conference – which takes place on day one of LuxLive, Wednesday 14 November 2018 – include DW Windsor, Holophane, CU Phosco, Cimcon Lighting, Thorlux Lighting and WE-EF. Entry is free to local authorities, specifiers and independent designers, consultants and those responsible for outdoor urban lighting.
- The Safer Cities conference is just one of nine conference tracks at LuxLive 2018, which will be held at ExCeL London on Wednesday 14 November and Thursday 15 November 2018. See the full programme, and details of the seven other conference streams HERE.
