THE LEAD architect behind this year’s RIBA Stirling Prize winning building will tell the untold story behind the project’s ground-breaking innovations at this year’s LuxLive exhibition.
Michael Jones, the senior partner who lead the architectural team at Foster + Partners, will reveal how Bloomberg’s European headquarters achieved an unprecedented 98.5 per cent ‘outstanding’ rating against the latest Breeam sustainability standard, the highest design-stage score of any major office development.
Announcing the award last night, RIBA President Ben Derbyshire, described the HQ in the City of London as a ‘monumental achievement’.
A remarkable bespoke ceiling combines cooling, lighting and acoustic functions in one single 100mm deep plane. It’s created from over two million three-dimensional, formed-metal petals that house over 500,000 LEDs where the petals intersect. This innovative, low-brightness system is calibrated at a reduced output to minimise wattage consumption while still achieving the desired 300 lux on the working plane throughout.
The public realm around the building is topped with a ribbon of crystalline fins, edge-lit with concealed LEDs adding a sparkle of light that creates a unique identity for the two lower floors.
Accent lights located between the fins, tilted minimally out towards the carriageways provide soft illumination while linear LEDs, with carefully selected optics for each unique application, are recessed within the top of the stone plinth to uplight the stone soffits.
These combined elements allowed the designers to avoid use of the standard building-mounted fittings with their associated glare issues. The intricate layers of lighting used to render the exterior facades give the appearance of self-illumination from within while providing light to the surrounding public areas.
Earlier this year, Tillotson Design Associates of New York collected a coveted Lighting Design Award for its work on the lighting with Foster + Partners. It won the Workplace Project of the Year as well as the Global Project of the Year. The Lighting Design Awards was described by the judges as a scheme of ‘incredible complexity and sophistication’.
