Introducing Vive wireless lighting control solutions

Lutron has introduced a new wireless lighting control system for the business sector. Vive has been designed to manage lighting across any number of commercial operations: offices, education, healthcare, leisure and hospitality.

With Lutron being the nearest to a collective noun in the lighting industry, we’ve all been waiting to see how this well-established company would respond to the new connected possibilities for lighting controls. The introduction of Vive wireless lighting controls demonstrates a legacy of over 57 years of experience in managing lighting at the highest end of the lighting specification market. And, as one might expect, the system is seen from the point of view of the end user; it’s one thing having connected technology, but it’s something altogether different understanding how clients might want to use it.

Lutron has been listening to its end-users and produced a control platform that has simplicity at its heart.

Installation times of the wireless system are reckoned to be 70 per cent faster than conventional wired systems, and it’s scalable. What might start as a single office or executive meeting room can be expanded to an entire department, office floor or a whole building. And the technology is there to encompass a multi-building estate.

Energy management sits at the heart of the system. As energy standards become ever more stringent it is vital to ensure that lighting controls are working in the background to assist in that management. The Vive system includes all of the tools that are a prerequisite for good energy control. A range of sensing tools provides automatic control of lighting via occupancy sensors and daylight measurement, and the software also allows demand response during times of peak usage.

Design flexibility is an increasingly important factor in spatial design. The days of the fixed space are gone, and as a consequence of that, any lighting installation needs to be able to respond to changes. Conventional wired systems are an encumbrance to spatial fluidity. The wireless communication provided by the Vive system means that lighting control can be reconfigured without any need to physically access the luminaire or reroute any cabling.

Light performance is the thing that Lutron has been best known for – the ability to ‘tune’ a space via a sophisticated lighting management system. While some wireless systems are designed to provide the services already described, Lutron hasn’t forgotten its roots. Once the energy management has been sorted and the practicalities of installation have been resolved, it’s the day-to-day functionality that gives a lighting system its worth.

The Vive system can be matched to the main control protocols – switching/DALI/0-10V and contact enclosure outputs or BACnet for integration. Programming can be done using any handheld smart device, via the unique Vive wireless hub.
