The light that adjusts for your age

DYSON has unveiled a task light which adjusts its light output depending on the age of the customer.

‘With the Dyson Lightcycle Morph, our aim was to challenge the fundamental conventions of contemporary artificial lighting and find a solution,’ said chief engineer Jake Dyson.

‘So we developed a light that tracks natural day light and intelligently transforms for different uses – providing the right light, at the right time, precisely where it’s needed.’

The lamp uses a daylight-tracking algorithm combined with three warm and three cool LEDs to tune to colour temperature and output.

The optical head rotates 360 degrees to bounce light off walls, floors and ceilings while the stem lights up in an orange glow.

A colour warming orange filter on the dock creates the ultra-warm light, reducing the colour temperature down from 2700K to 1800K to emulate the colour of candle light.

In a bedroom, it can be set to deliver an artificial sunrise every morning to wake the owner gently and naturally.

The product also boasts Dyson’s long-established ‘heat pipe technology’ which draws heat away from the LEDs to deliver a claimed life of 60 years.

The stem is machined to a depth of 0.7mm and formed of extruded aluminium to deliver a balance of high impact resistance and smooth light travel.

Some 16,740 perforated micro apertures create a gradient to the lit effect and the highly reflective surface inside the aluminium core aids a travel of light down the length of the stem.

With an almost transparent aesthetic, two ultra-thin exposed cables run through the centre.

Clamped at both ends under extreme tension, these cables power the optical head in an almost invisible manner – achieving a 360°, uninterrupted lit effect on the stem.

Dyson says that as a 65-year old needs up to four times more light than a 20-year old, the Age Adjust features corrects brightness based on the age entered into the app, meaning that the older the user, the brighter the light.  It also  has a number of pre-set modes: study, relax, precision, boost, wake-up, sleep and away.

It has manual control with slide-touch dimming and colour temperature selection to define personal light preferences. It’s also possible to pre-programme and assign names for up to 20 different light settings, to suit the task or mood.

An infrared movement sensor switches the light on when someone is near, and off once no movement has been detected for five minutes, helping to save energy.

An ambient light sensor means that if background light suddenly changes, light output levels are adjusted to keep the user’s space at a constant brightness.

The lower reflector is engineered to protect eyes from glare and focus the light for a pool of uniform illumination, with the light source concealed.

These features don’t come cheap though – the Desk version has a list price of £500 and Floor version costs £650.
