City’s lighting-as-a-service deal is a first

Municipality chiefs hope to transform Pune into a smart city thanks to the connected streetlights. The lighting project –  fully self-financed through energy and maintenance cost savings – boasts remote group control and monitoring.

THE INDIAN city of Pune has become the first in the country to sign a so-called lighting-as-a-service deal.

The historic conurbation – home to three million people – has replaced some 80,000 halogen street lights with wireless LED luminaires.

Municipality chiefs hope to transform Pune into a smart city thanks to the connected streetlights.

The lighting project –  fully self-financed through energy and maintenance cost savings – boasts remote group control and monitoring.

The city’s conventional streetlights were costly and used a lot of energy. At the same time, planners were keen to establish more even light levels and secure consistent maintenance. 

A new road lighting solution was proposed to reduce expenses and streamline operations. 

This public-private partnership was the first of its kind in India. 

The Signify Interact City platform reduces energy costs and increases efficiency by collecting and analysing data.

This enables better planning of maintenance, and delivers better service for citizens. through the energy savings and reductions in maintenance costs that LED technology brings.

The entire project resulted in no additional expenses for the city. 

In addition to replacing 80,000 halogen lights with energy-saving LED luminaires, the city ensured that all the street lighting is remotely connected and can be monitored and controlled from a single command and control room. 

This allows city authorities to dim groups of lights.

Remote monitoring identifies faulty streetlights, and automatic fault notifications are sent via SMS to registered mobile devices, so that maintenance crews can more easily and swiftly fix or replace them, minimising downtime. 

The result of the installation has been an improvement in street lighting levels, a reduction of downtime and reduced energy consumption. 

The Interact City system has also improved the street lighting systems’ performance and enhanced road safety for citizens. 

The system also provides customers with a robust infrastructure to deliver city services, improve public safety, beautify public spaces, engage with citizens and encourage civic pride.
