AFTER YEARS of development, Dutch lighting giant Signify has unveiled its rival to the Coelux artificial skylight which wowed the lighting industry on its launch in 2014 and went on to win multiple awards.

Dubbed NatureConnect, Signify’s LED-based system has the key characteristic of the Coelux of a perception of space and depth beyond the ceiling to give a feeling of freedom and sense of time.

Like Coelux, the company is being coy about the operation and technical details of the NatureConnect. All the company will say is that it is ‘built on on proven biophilic design principles, which use elements of nature in interior spaces to create healthy, engaging and inspiring environments’.

The first trial installation of NatureConnect is currently taking place at one of Skanska’s offices in Warsaw, Poland, the leading international project development and construction company.

The NatureConnect is actually a system, a combination of  various LED luminaires – the Skylight as well as Daylight and Lightscape – all featuring intuitive control to create lighting scenes tailored to people’s needs, ‘based on proven and valued natural experiences’.

Signify says the product supports our natural rhythm by mimicking the rhythm of sunlight to support us to be active during the day and sleep well at night.
‘Office workers spend the majority of their time indoor,’ says Katarzyna Zawodna-Bijoch, president and CEO at Skanska’s commercial development business in Central Eastern Europe.

‘The quality of the space influences their health, comfort and efficiency.
‘At Skanska we have been aware of this fact for many years. That is why the innovative and environmental-friendly solutions in our buildings support people’s wellbeing.

‘One of these solutions brings natural daylight indoors. Research shows that quality lighting significantly impacts how we feel and how effective we are.
‘The project which we are conducting with Signify provides us a new opportunity to continuously improve people’s office experience, which makes us very excited about our collaboration going forward.’

‘In our modern world, people spend on average more than 90 per cent of their time indoors, where they lack access to proper daylight to support their wellbeing’.

Dubbed NatureConnect, Signify’s LED-based system, left, has the key characteristic of the Coelux, right, of a perception of space and depth beyond the ceiling to give a feeling of freedom and sense of time.

‘Exposure to the right amount of light during the day, as well as the colours and dynamics from nature, are vital to us in many ways’ said Olivia Qiu, chief innovation officer at Signify.

‘They strongly impact our mood, energy level, comfort, quality of sleep and our health and wellbeing in general. The importance of healthy and engaged employees has become a boardroom priority. NatureConnect’s lighting proposition is designed to benefit the body and mind, and in return, lead to increased productivity, engagement and workplace satisfaction.’
