TOP DUTCH soccer club PSV is to tackle Covid-19 by installing UV-C disinfection lighting in its changing rooms.
The football team will put three so-called ‘upper room disinfection’ units in its
the dressing room and three in the dressing room of the visiting team in the Philips stadium in Eindhoven.
Another five will be installed in the dressing room at its Campus De Herdgang training facility and four in the medical section.
Unsurprisingly, the luminaire will be sourced from its sponsor, Signify.
‘Safeguarding player health is very important to us and essential for matches to continue,’ said Frans Janssen, commercial director at PSV.
‘That’s why we want to protect them, and the visiting players, to the best of our ability.
‘We are convinced that upper air disinfection enables us to provide our players with that extra layer of protection.’
UV-C breaks down the DNA or RNA of microorganisms, including viruses and bacteria, rendering them harmless.
Mercury-based UV-C lamps emit a peak of radiation at 254 nm, which is near the peak wavelength for germ deactivation.
The UV-C disinfection upper air luminaires can be used with people present. They continuously disinfect the air that flows through the upper areas of the dressing rooms thanks to natural convection, or air circulation.
This also ensures that the disinfected air flows back to the lower part of the dressing rooms and mixes with the air.

The installation of the UV-C disinfecting lighting will take place later this month.
Signify warns that UV-C light ‘should always be used by professionals in accordance with the safety requirements and instructions’ to avoid humans and animals from being exposed to it since it can damage their skin and eyes.
