Groundsman killed by falling lighting rig

The volunteer groundsman is believed to have suffered a heart attack after he was hit by a large lighting rig at the Moustoir Stadium in Brittany, western France.

A FRENCH groundsman has been killed after a large lighting rig fell on him following a football match.

The volunteer at Brittany club FC Lorient, who has not been named, is believed to have suffered a heart attack after he was hit by the steel structure. 

The powerful lighting rig, which is used to stimulate growth of the grass, was rolled out after the Ligue 1 fixture between Lorient and Rennes at Moustoir Stadium in Brittany, western France.

Within minutes of the incident, which took place at 7pm local time on Sunday evening, members of the medical staff and fire fighters fought to resuscitate the 38-year-old man and performed cardiac massage but without success.

He was taken by ambulance to a local hospital for further treatment after 45 minutes, but died later in the night.

It’s understood that Dalbert, the Brazilian left back currently on loan to Rennes from Italian club Inter Milan, witnessed the collapse of the lighting lighting on the man and was said to be ‘greatly shocked’.

The club’s players and staff held a minutes’ silence a the Lorient training pitch today.
